Scotland, with its skills gap and ageing society needs its population to be supplemented by 23,000 per year to meet current economic targets. This is one reason to argue that the UK needs large-scale inwards migration, but how do we achieve this? How is the economic situation impacting on migration rates? How can Scotland promote itself as an attractive place to live and work? What role does internal migration play in the UK? And how can we successfully integrate those coming to Scotland and ensure key services are provided for them? Â
Meeting our population shortfall is a crucial issue and future changes in policy need to be explored now. This conference will offer an opportunity to take stock of the situation and explore how Scotland can better promote itself to others and improve the services that it is already providing. The issue of competitive advantage in attracting migrants is key to Scotland’s economic future and now is the time to assess what more can be done to attract migrants to live and work in this country.
This event will also look at how immigration impacts on the provision of services, particularly education, health and housing, and look at examples which are promoting better integration in communities. The role of local government in delivering these services is pivotal and speakers will explore council responsibilities and initiatives which are successfully engaging with existing and new populations.
